Dokunen – Strong Meds EP (SD001) – Press Pack Review

Following on from the label’s launch with its debut release ‘The Compilation‘ late last year, Simply Deep have primed up a first solo offering with newcoming producer Dokunen. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, his talents have been quickly recognised and Dokunen has duly taken this opportunity to make a rhythmic splash.

Appearing on the EP is the returning London producer Boxwork who comes through again with a funked-up take on Dokunen’s Strong Meds, after his dancefloor slamming ‘Shuka‘ featured as a highlight on Simply Deep’s LP.

Across the EP are the grime-tinged celestials of slow burner Strong Meds, backed with the dub atmospherics of Untitled oozing with melodica, and Boxwork’s darting ruckus of a remix for the release’s title track.

Dokunen himself marks his very first musical outing with two sublime approaches to dubstep, drawing loosely upon grime, ambient and dub influences to then channel that into his finely-tuned output.

SD001 dips firstly into the downtempo number of opening track Strong Meds, carrying a sparse but alluring energy to it. After opening initially with its warming bass and scattering percussion, Strong Meds gently trancends into a delicate sub-roller with it being led by its soft symphonics.

Citing some of his main influences as being Bristol-based producers Kahn, Phaeleh and Pinch, Dokunen certainly displays a similar finesse for dubstep production on the flipside with Untitled. The B-side leans into an elegant and hazy encounter, coupled with slick drum work to match the blissful dub organ harmonies – amounting to an absolutely captivating slice of soothing bass music.

To compliment Dokunen’s original productions we bring back Boxwork to supply his mischievous edit for Strong Meds, following on from some quality re-edits of My Nu Leng, Barla and Py in the past. The Strong Meds Boxwork treatment results in a straight up sub-workout that lays somewhere between the funky and 2-step territories.

The Strong Meds release package will be available to download exclusively from the Simply Deep Bandcamp store on 29th June, including all three tracks and album artwork. The release will then see its full release on 29th June, and will be available from all good online music retailers.
